It is well-known that our food is a source of energy and nutrition, but it also plays a crucial role in shaping our brain and thought processes. While India is traditionally known for its large vegetarian population, there is a growing trend toward non-vegetarian diets. However, many medical researchers, including Dr. Nil Bernard, Dr. Campbell, and Dr. Joel Fuhrman, have published research indicating that a plant-based diet can help reduce medication for chronic diseases. Moreover, a well-planned plant-based diet, combined with a healthy lifestyle, may even reverse chronic conditions like diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.

Inspired by these findings, Prof. Vijay Joshi transitioned to a plant-based diet in 2009 and modified his lifestyle under the guidance of the Sharan-India team. Within a year, he was able to discontinue his diabetes and hypertension medications, as confirmed by his diabetologist.

Prof. Joshi recommends the following lifestyle modifications for those who want to maintain or regain their health:

  1. Maximize the consumption of plant-based foods and minimize non-vegetarian options.
  2. Reduce the intake of processed, packaged, and long-lasting foods.
  3. Limit the consumption of bakery products and refined white flour (maida) based foods.
  4. Cut back on oily and fried foods.
  5. Ensure at least 7 hours of restful sleep.
  6. Engage in regular exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
  7. Practice mindfulness or meditation for 20 minutes daily.
  8. Reduce the consumption of sugary sweets.
  9. Chew food thoroughly and savor the taste.
  10. Include more fresh fruits and salads in your diet.
  11. Stay well-hydrated, considering the season and your activity level.
  12. Spend time in nature and sunshine whenever possible.
